Onion necrosis virus

Betanecrovirus porri is a plant-pathogenic virus within the genus Betanecrovirus, part of the Tombusviridae family. It is identified as the causative agent of systemic necrosis in various vegetable crops. As a viral disease, it interferes with the plant's metabolic functions, leading to significant yield losses and reduced quality of harvested bulbs.

The virus primarily affects species within the Allium genus. This includes common onions (Allium cepa), leeks (Allium ampeloprasum), and other related culinary varieties. Since the virus can infect plants at different developmental stages, monitoring fields for early signs is essential for maintaining crop health throughout the growing season.

Typical symptoms manifest as chlorotic spots on foliage, which eventually progress into necrotic lesions as the plant tissue dies. Infected plants often show signs of stunted growth, leaf twisting, and overall decline. The aesthetic damage and internal tissue breakdown render the bulbs unsuitable for commercial sale and storage, leading to substantial economic impact.

The transmission and development of the virus are heavily reliant on soil-borne vectors, specifically chytrid fungi such as Olpidium brassicae. These fungi release zoospores in wet soil, facilitating the entry of the virus into the roots of the host plant. Once introduced, the virus can spread further through contaminated agricultural machinery, infected soil, or irrigation water moving across the field.

Preventive measures are the only effective way to manage the disease, as there are no direct cures for plant viruses. Key strategies include practicing long-term crop rotation to break the cycle of the vector fungi, ensuring the use of pathogen-free planting material, and implementing strict sanitation protocols for farm equipment. Minimizing soil compaction and managing soil moisture can also help reduce the activity of the fungal vectors, thereby limiting the risk of a viral outbreak.
