Betapartitivirus ceratocystis is a mycovirus belonging to the Partitiviridae family. Unlike traditional agricultural pathogens, this virus infects fungal organisms rather than plants. It consists of a segmented double-stranded RNA genome encapsulated within simple, non-enveloped icosahedral virions that replicate within the cytoplasm of the fungal host.

The primary hosts for this virus are fungi of the genus Ceratocystis, which are notorious for causing wilt diseases, cankers, and root rot in numerous woody species, including tropical crops like cacao and eucalyptus. The virus lives endocellularly, hijacking the fungus's own cellular machinery to produce its viral components.

The most significant symptom of this viral infection is the induction of hypovirulence. When a Ceratocystis colony is infected, it often exhibits reduced growth rates, altered sporulation patterns, and a significantly weakened ability to produce the extracellular enzymes and toxins necessary to overcome host plant defenses.

Transmission of the virus occurs via hyphal anastomosis, where the fungal mycelia fuse during growth. This process depends on vegetative compatibility between the donor and recipient strains. Once inside the mycelium, the virus spreads systemically, gradually colonizing the fungus and potentially altering the ecological fitness of the host population.

Agricultural research focuses on this virus as a potential agent for the biocontrol of Ceratocystis-induced diseases. By introducing or encouraging the spread of hypovirulent, virus-infected strains within a plantation, growers may be able to naturally suppress the damage caused by highly aggressive wild-type fungal pathogens.
