Unlike plant viruses that infect crops directly, this organism is a mycovirus, which means it specifically targets and inhabits the cells of fungi belonging to the Fusarium genus, a major group of plant-pathogenic fungi.

The causative agent is a double-stranded RNA virus. The infection is categorized as a mycovirus infection, which essentially acts as a form of parasitism within the fungal mycelium. This interaction is complex, as the virus does not typically kill the host fungus but rather alters its behavior and virulence profile.

The primary hosts of this virus are various Fusarium species that cause severe diseases in crops like wheat, maize, and various vegetables.
