Hop betapartitivirus

Betapartitivirus humuli is a plant viral pathogen belonging to the genus Betapartitivirus in the family Partitiviridae. It is a double-stranded RNA virus that is widely recognized in hop production regions, often manifesting as a latent infection that does not produce dramatic clinical symptoms, making early detection a significant agronomic challenge.

The primary host for this virus is the hop plant (Humulus lupulus). Once the virus enters the plant system, it spreads through the vascular tissues, affecting the overall physiological balance of the plant. Although it may not kill the plant outright, it can undermine the long-term vigor of the crop, impacting the yield and brewing quality of the hop cones.

Symptoms of infection are frequently subtle and can easily be overlooked. Growers may notice reduced plant growth, slight leaf discoloration, or stunted development. Because these signs overlap with nutrient deficiencies or environmental stress, diagnostic laboratory methods such as RT-PCR are essential for confirming the presence of the virus in hop yards.

Development and transmission of Betapartitivirus humuli are primarily driven by vegetative propagation. Using infected rhizomes to establish new plantings is the most common way for the virus to spread across fields. Mechanical transmission through contaminated pruning tools during routine hop yard maintenance also plays a role in the dissemination of the pathogen within an existing plantation.

Effective management and prevention strategies focus on strict phytosanitary measures:

• Source certified virus-free propagating material from reputable nurseries.
• Implement rigorous disinfection protocols for all pruning and harvesting equipment.
• Monitor plantations for signs of decline or atypical growth patterns.
• Rouging and removing infected plants to reduce the inoculum reservoir within the field.
