Blackcurrant reversion, caused by the Blackcurrant reversion virus, is the most destructive disease affecting blackcurrant plantations worldwide. This virus induces a systematic physiological shift, causing the plant to revert to a primitive, sterile state where it ceases to produce berries.

The primary vector for the transmission of this virus is the blackcurrant gall mite (Cecidophyopsis ribis). As the mites feed on the developing buds, they facilitate the entry of the virus into the plant's vascular system. Furthermore, the disease is easily spread through the use of infected cuttings during propagation, making nursery hygiene essential.

Symptoms are most visible during the flowering stage. Infected flowers exhibit deformed, narrow, and often purplish-green petals, rendering them sterile. Foliage symptoms include changes in leaf shape—leaves become asymmetric, show a reduction in lobes, and lose their characteristic serrated margins. A diagnostic sign is the disappearance of the distinct blackcurrant scent when the leaf is crushed.

The disease thrives in environments suitable for the gall mite, usually moderate to warm climates. Once infected, a plant cannot recover. The damage is cumulative, leading to complete sterility over time and a significant economic impact on agricultural production, as affected bushes serve as a continuous source of infection for healthy plants.

Managing the disease requires a rigorous preventative approach, as there is no chemical cure for the virus itself. Recommended strategies include:

  • Ensuring the use of certified virus-free planting material.
  • Early detection and immediate removal of infected bushes, including their root systems.
  • Implementing effective acaricide spray programs to control the population of gall mites.
  • Selecting and breeding cultivars with genetic resistance to the disease.
