Blunervirus is a genus of plant-infecting viruses characterized by a segmented, single-stranded RNA genome. These viruses primarily target the vascular tissues of host plants, leading to systemic infections that can severely compromise the plant's structural and metabolic integrity.
The host range of Blunervirus includes a variety of economically important vegetable and field crops. While the susceptibility varies among species, the pathogen is particularly noted for causing significant physiological distress in young, rapidly growing plants, affecting their overall vigor and development.
The clinical symptoms of a Blunervirus infection include leaf mosaic patterns, yellowing of the veins, and generalized stunting of the plant. In many cases, infected plants exhibit distorted leaf growth and brittle stems, which directly interferes with photosynthesis and nutrient uptake, ultimately leading to yield loss.
