Description
Bluvavirus (lat. Bluvavirus) is a genus of viruses that primarily infect berry crops, specifically plants belonging to the Ericaceae family. The pathogen is an RNA virus transmitted through mechanical means, such as pruning tools, and by insect vectors that feed on the sap of infected plant tissues.
The main hosts for this pathogen are highbush blueberries and wild blueberries. Within commercial plantations, the virus can spread rapidly, causing systemic infection throughout the plant, which leads to plant degradation and a significant reduction in the quantity and quality of the berries produced.
Symptoms of the disease manifest as chlorotic spots, leaf mottling, and mosaic patterns on the foliage. In advanced stages, stunted growth, shortened internodes, and deformation of leaves are observed. Berries on infected plants often become undersized, lose their typical flavor, and exhibit poor ripening characteristics.
The development of the infection is closely linked to the presence of insect vectors and the quality of the planting material. Warm and humid conditions favor the population growth of aphids and leafhoppers, which facilitate the transmission of the virus. Poor agricultural practices that weaken the plant's natural immunity further increase the susceptibility to infection.
The damage caused by Bluvavirus is significant due to the lack of curative chemical treatments. Protection strategies rely on strict prevention: using certified virus-free planting material, maintaining strict hygiene of pruning tools, implementing pest control programs to manage insect populations, and roguing out symptomatic plants to prevent further spread.
