Description

Blueberry shoestring virus, taxonomically classified as Bluvavirus vaccinii, is a significant viral pathogen affecting highbush blueberry cultivars. This virus disrupts the host's physiological processes, leading to significant yield reduction, fruit quality degradation, and, in severe cases, the complete decline of the plant vitality.

The virus primarily targets species within the Vaccinium genus. It is most prevalent in North American regions where highbush blueberries are cultivated at commercial scales, and where the environmental conditions favor the proliferation of its primary insect vector during the spring and summer growing seasons.

Symptoms of the disease are diverse but visually distinct. The most diagnostic signs include elongated, reddish streaks on healthy green stems, and the characteristic shoestring-like distortion of the leaves, where the leaf blades narrow significantly. Fruits on infected shrubs often fail to color properly, appearing reddish or speckled, which renders the harvest unmarketable.

The virus is transmitted in a persistent manner by the blueberry aphid (Illinoia pepperi). Once an aphid acquires the virus from an infected host, it retains the capacity to transmit it for the remainder of its lifespan. This transmission mechanism allows the virus to spread rapidly throughout a field if insect populations are not strictly managed.

Control strategies for Bluvavirus vaccinii are strictly preventative, as no curative treatments exist for infected perennial shrubs. Effective management includes:

  • planting only certified virus-indexed nursery stock;
  • implementing rigorous insect pest management programs to control Illinoia pepperi;
  • practicing systematic sanitation by promptly rogueing and destroying any symptomatic plants detected in the field to eliminate potential inoculum sources.
