Brambyvirus

Brambyvirus is a genus of plant viruses within the Betaflexiviridae family. These pathogens are recognized in agricultural science for infecting various plants, primarily those in the Rubus genus, such as blackberries and raspberries. As systemic infections, they interfere with the host plant's vital physiological functions, leading to reduced vigor and productivity.

The virus is characterized by its filamentous morphology and positive-sense single-stranded RNA genome. Being a vascular pathogen, it travels through the phloem of the host plant. Once established, the virus can remain within the plant tissues permanently, creating a persistent source of infection that often spreads throughout the entire plant system, affecting both leaves and fruit production.

Symptoms of Brambyvirus infection are often complex and can vary depending on the host cultivar and environmental conditions. Common indicators include foliage chlorosis, mosaic-like patterns, leaf curling, and stunted growth of shoots. In advanced stages of infection, plants may exhibit reduced fruit quality, smaller berry size, and a significant decrease in overall crop yield.

Transmission of Brambyvirus is primarily facilitated by insect vectors, most notably aphids, which acquire the virus through feeding and subsequently transmit it to healthy plants. Additionally, the virus is easily spread through the use of infected propagation materials, such as cuttings or root suckers. Mechanical transmission through contaminated pruning tools is less common but still a potential risk factor in intensive farming.

Managing Brambyvirus requires a robust integrated pest management approach, as there are no direct chemical treatments to cure infected plants. Preventive measures are the most effective strategy: sourcing certified virus-free planting material, controlling insect vectors with timely insecticide applications, and strictly removing and destroying infected plants to prevent the virus from spreading further across the field.
