Description
Brambyvirus rubi is a viral pathogen known for causing the bushy dwarf disease in various Rubus species. As a member of the Brambyvirus genus, this virus is a significant concern for commercial berry production, leading to systemic infections that impact the entire plant structure.
The primary host plants for this virus are raspberries (Rubus idaeus). The virus interferes with the host's normal physiological development, causing significant disruptions in growth hormones and nutrient transport systems, which manifests in both vegetative and reproductive stages.
Symptoms of the infection include severe stunting of the plant, proliferation of small and weak lateral shoots, and leaf chlorosis or distortion. In many cases, infected plants appear bushy with a dense, stunted growth habit. Fruit production is drastically affected, with berries becoming malformed, crumbly, and smaller in size, significantly reducing marketability.
The virus is spread primarily through the use of infected planting stock, which is the most common way for the disease to be introduced into new fields.
