Description

Brome mosaic virus (BMV) is a plant pathogenic virus belonging to the Bromovirus genus. It is highly contagious and affects various monocotyledonous plants, causing significant economic damage to cereal grain production worldwide. The virus possesses a multipartite positive-sense RNA genome, which facilitates rapid replication and systemic spread within the host plant tissues.

The virus primarily infects grass species (Poaceae), including economically important crops such as wheat, barley, oats, and maize. In addition to agricultural crops, numerous wild grasses serve as reservoir hosts, allowing the virus to persist in the environment between growing seasons and re-infect new plantings.

Symptoms of BMV infection typically include mosaic patterns on leaves, characterized by alternating light and dark green areas. Infected plants may exhibit stunted growth, reduced tillering, leaf distortion, and severe chlorosis. In susceptible varieties, the virus leads to poor grain filling, which translates into lower yields and significantly degraded crop quality.

Transmission occurs through several pathways: mechanical contact, seed transmission, and via various insect vectors. Aphids, beetles, and nematodes are known to transport the virus particles from infected wild hosts or neighboring crops. Environmental conditions that favor the proliferation of these insect vectors are strongly correlated with the intensity of viral outbreaks.

There are no chemical pesticides that directly treat viral infections once established in the plant, making prevention the cornerstone of management. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies for BMV include using virus-free certified seeds, eliminating grass weeds around fields to remove inoculum sources, and implementing rigorous insect control programs to manage the vectors that spread the pathogen.
