Cowpea chlorotic mottle virus (CCMV) is a significant plant pathogen belonging to the genus Bromovirus. It is a virus that causes systemic infections in various legume species, causing significant physiological disruptions and limiting the agricultural productivity of affected crops.
The primary host for this virus is the cowpea, although it has a wide host range that includes several other bean varieties. The virus infects the plant systemically, infiltrating the vascular tissues and interfering with the normal development of leaves, stems, and fruits, which ultimately results in severe growth retardation.
Visual symptoms usually appear as bright chlorotic patterns or mosaic spotting on leaves. In severe cases, these symptoms are accompanied by leaf curling, stunted plant architecture, and a noticeable reduction in pod set. The reduced photosynthetic efficiency of infected plants leads to smaller seeds and significantly diminished crop yields.
Transmission occurs primarily through biological vectors such as leaf-feeding beetles, which efficiently spread the virus throughout a field. Mechanical transmission also plays a role, especially in dense planting conditions where foliage contact or contaminated agricultural equipment can facilitate the transfer of viral particles from infected to healthy plant tissues.
