Brown canker

Cryptosporella umbrina

Description

Brown canker is a serious fungal disease caused by the pathogen Cryptosporella umbrina. It is classified as a stem canker disease, which interferes with the vascular system of the plant, often leading to the wilting and eventual death of infected canes if left untreated.

This pathogen primarily targets roses. It colonizes the canes, frequently entering through wounds caused by pruning, winter injury, or insect feeding. Once inside, the fungus spreads slowly, causing systemic damage that weakens the plant's structural integrity and aesthetic value.

Key symptoms include the appearance of small, circular, reddish-purple spots that expand into larger, tan or brown lesions. As the infection progresses, the centers of these lesions may turn white, while the edges remain dark. Eventually, the cane may become girdled, leading to the death of the distal parts of the plant.

The development of the disease is highly favored by high humidity, poor air circulation within the shrub, and rainfall. Splashing water acts as a primary vector for spore dispersal, carrying the fungus from infected plant parts to healthy shoots, especially during the spring and late summer months.

Management relies on rigorous sanitation practices, including the removal and destruction of all infected canes. It is crucial to prune at least several inches below the infected area into healthy, white pith tissue. Applying copper-based fungicides in the early spring, before buds break, can significantly reduce the risk of primary infections.

In addition to chemical control, proper garden maintenance is essential. Maintaining optimal spacing between plants ensures adequate air movement, reducing the time that foliage stays wet. Always clean and sterilize pruning tools between bushes to prevent the accidental mechanical transmission of fungal spores throughout the rose bed.
