Description
Bymovirus is a genus of plant viruses within the family Potyviridae, known primarily for causing significant diseases in cereal crops. These viruses are characterized by their multipartite single-stranded RNA genome and their reliance on soil-borne vectors to infect host plants.
The primary hosts for Bymovirus are cultivated cereals, specifically barley and wheat. The most well-documented member of this group is the Barley yellow mosaic virus (BaYMV). These diseases are particularly prevalent in intensive cereal-growing areas and can cause severe epidemics under specific environmental conditions.
Symptoms of Bymovirus infection typically appear in early spring, manifesting as yellow or chlorotic streaks, patches, or mosaic patterns on the leaves. Infected plants often exhibit stunted growth, reduced tillering, and an overall decrease in vigor, which substantially limits the potential for grain yield and reduces harvest quality.
The transmission mechanism of Bymovirus is unique as it requires the obligate interaction with a soil-dwelling plasmodiophorid fungus, Polymyxa graminis. The virus particles reside within the resting spores of the fungus in the soil, allowing the pathogen to persist for several years. Infection typically occurs when fungal zoospores swim in the soil moisture and penetrate the root system of young seedlings.
Managing Bymovirus is challenging due to the lack of chemical treatments against plant viruses. The most effective strategy remains the use of resistant crop varieties, which are bred to prevent viral replication. Additional management practices include adopting longer crop rotations to reduce the resting spore density in the soil, optimizing sowing dates to avoid favorable conditions for the vector, and implementing soil drainage to reduce waterlogging.
