Description

Wheat yellow mosaic is a significant viral disease caused by members of the Bymovirus genus. This disease presents a major challenge to wheat production globally, as it affects the plant's ability to photosynthesize and develop healthy root systems during the early vegetative stages.

The primary host crops include winter wheat and barley. These plants serve as the biological substrate for the virus, which is capable of surviving for several years in the soil within the resting spores of its vector, even in the absence of a host crop.

Symptoms typically appear in early spring after the resumption of growth. Infected leaves exhibit characteristic yellow, spindle-shaped streaks or mosaic patterns. Severe infections lead to stunted plant development, reduced tillering, and potential necrosis of the leaf tissue under stress conditions.

The disease is transmitted by the soil-borne plasmodiophorid fungus Polymyxa graminis. The virus is introduced into the roots by the zoospores of the fungus, which thrive in wet, cool soil conditions, making drainage and field selection critical factors for disease management.

Control strategies are primarily focused on preventative measures. Key approaches include the cultivation of resistant or tolerant wheat varieties, long-term crop rotation to reduce the inoculum load in the soil, and ensuring optimal soil drainage to limit the activity of the fungal vector.
