Description
The causative agent is a virus belonging to the Bymovirus genus, which is primarily responsible for systemic infection in winter cereals. As an obligate parasite, the virus relies entirely on its host plant and the soil-borne fungal vector for survival and transmission within agricultural fields.
Wheat is the primary host for this pathogen, although it can infect various barley cultivars and specific wild grass species. The virus interferes with the host's photosynthetic activity, leading to systemic disruptions that manifest early in the plant's life cycle during the spring growth restart.
