Cacao swollen shoot virus (CSSV) is a significant plant pathogen that affects the cocoa tree (Theobroma cacao). Classified as a badnavirus, it causes systemic infection that disrupts the normal growth patterns of the tree, leading to significant yield reduction and eventual plant mortality if left unmanaged.

The disease is primarily localized in West Africa, which is the world's largest cocoa-producing region. The virus infects various parts of the plant, including the stems, roots, and leaves, severely impacting the tree's metabolic functions and its ability to produce viable cocoa beans for the global market.

Symptoms are distinct and diagnostic: the most prominent feature is the swelling of stems and branches caused by the proliferation of xylem and phloem tissues. Additionally, leaves exhibit characteristic mosaic patterns, and pods become deformed, stunted, and significantly reduced in seed count, rendering them commercially worthless.

Transmission occurs through mealybugs (family Pseudococcidae), which act as efficient vectors. By feeding on the phloem of infected trees, they ingest the viral particles and transmit them to healthy trees during subsequent feeding events. The spread is facilitated by canopy connectivity, making densely planted orchards highly susceptible to rapid outbreaks.
