Description
Capillovirus is a genus of plant viruses within the family Betaflexiviridae. These viruses are characterized by flexible, filamentous virions containing a positive-sense single-stranded RNA genome. The genus is widely known for including the Apple Stem Grooving Virus (ASGV), which causes significant economic losses in temperate fruit production globally.
These viruses primarily infect woody perennials, with a specific preference for members of the Rosaceae family. Apples and pears are the most commonly reported hosts. The virus systemically colonizes the plant's phloem, which leads to metabolic disruptions and long-term decline in tree vigor. Many cultivars remain asymptomatic for years, acting as hidden reservoirs for the infection.
Clinical symptoms vary depending on the host cultivar and environmental conditions. The most characteristic signs include deep grooves and pits in the wood under the bark, which can lead to tree fragility and graft incompatibility. Foliage may exhibit chlorosis, curling, or early senescence. In severe cases, fruit quality is significantly compromised, showing uneven growth and reduced sugar content, rendering them unmarketable.
Transmission of Capillovirus occurs mainly through propagation practices. Using infected scion wood or rootstocks is the primary way the disease spreads across orchards. Mechanical transmission via contaminated pruning tools is also a critical factor. Unlike some other viruses, Capillovirus is not typically transmitted by common insect vectors such as aphids, though soil-borne transmission remains a possibility under specific conditions.
The primary control measure is the use of high-quality, virus-tested, and certified disease-free nursery stock. Orchards must be established with tested material to prevent long-term infection cycles. Pruning protocols should include strict disinfection of shears and saws with effective chemical solutions (such as bleach or ethanol) between every tree. Eradication of infected trees is necessary if visual symptoms or laboratory testing confirm the presence of the pathogen.
