Description
Apple stem grooving virus (Capillovirus alphamume) is a significant viral pathogen that affects apple trees and other related pome fruits. The virus belongs to the Capillovirus genus and causes a systemic infection, primarily damaging the cambium and xylem tissues. This disease is particularly concerning due to its ability to remain latent in host plants for several years.
The virus primarily impacts apple cultivars, although some pear and other rosaceous species are also susceptible. Transmission typically occurs through vegetative propagation, specifically via infected scions or rootstocks. Mechanical transmission can also take place in the nursery or orchard environment through pruning tools if they are not properly sanitized after contact with infected trees.
Symptoms are often masked in early stages, making early detection difficult. However, the most distinctive characteristic is the presence of deep grooves and pits on the wood under the bark of the trunk and main branches. In addition to structural wood damage, infected trees often show signs of overall decline, such as stunted growth, yellowing or curling leaves, and reduced vigor.

Furthermore, implementing rigorous hygiene protocols for pruning equipment and the immediate removal and destruction of symptomatic trees are essential strategies to limit the spread of the virus within the orchard.
