Currant capillovirus (Capillovirus alpharibis) is a viral plant pathogen belonging to the Capillovirus genus. This virus acts as an obligate parasite, invading the host plant's cells and disrupting their metabolic processes. As a systemic pathogen, it spreads throughout the vascular system, often leading to chronic infection that significantly affects the overall vigor and yield of the plant.
The primary hosts for this virus are various species within the Ribes genus, most notably black and red currants. The virus represents a major challenge for berry production, as it negatively impacts fruit quality and reduces plant longevity. Infections are particularly devastating in nurseries, where the virus can spread silently through large batches of propagation material.
The clinical signs of Capillovirus alpharibis include chlorotic spotting, leaf mottling, and general plant stunting. Infected bushes often exhibit deformed leaves and may show signs of premature senescence. Because these symptoms can mimic nutrient deficiencies or environmental stress, molecular diagnostic testing is often required to confirm the presence of the viral infection.
The virus is disseminated primarily through the movement of infected plant materials, such as cuttings or nursery stock. Insect vectors, including aphids and mites, facilitate the spread of the virus within a plantation by feeding on infected plants and then moving to healthy ones. Additionally, mechanical transmission occurs through contaminated pruning tools, which can spread the virus rapidly during routine maintenance.
There are no chemical treatments available to cure plants infected with this virus; therefore, disease management must be focused on prevention. Producers are advised to implement strict phytosanitary practices, including sourcing pathogen-tested stock and maintaining a vigorous pest management program to control potential vectors. Once a plant is identified as infected, it should be rogued and destroyed to prevent the reservoir of the virus from expanding.
