Description
Apple stem grooving virus (ASGV), associated with the genus Capillovirus, is a significant viral pathogen that affects the health and structural integrity of fruit trees. The virus interferes with vascular transport, ultimately hindering the tree's ability to thrive and produce fruit.
The primary hosts of this virus include apples and pears, but it has a wide range of secondary hosts among woody perennials. It is a major concern for nurseries as it can be easily transmitted during vegetative propagation, compromising the quality of rootstocks and scions alike.
Symptoms vary depending on the host variety and environmental conditions. Key clinical signs include:
- Distinctive grooves and pits on the wood under the bark of the trunk and main branches.
- Stunted growth of the entire tree leading to reduced yields.
- Chlorosis, mottling, or necrosis on the leaves in some sensitive cultivars.
- Increased susceptibility to abiotic stresses like drought or winter cold.
Transmission of the virus is primarily horizontal via grafting and pruning using contaminated tools. There is also evidence that it can be transmitted through pollen or seeds in some specific species, though human intervention through orchard management remains the most common pathway for spreading the virus.
Currently, there are no chemical cures for the viral infection once the tree is infected. Protection strategy is entirely preventative: sourcing virus-indexed plant material is critical. Maintaining strict hygiene in the orchard by disinfecting pruning equipment after every tree and monitoring trees for signs of decline are the most effective ways to manage the disease.
