Description

Capulavirus is a genus of plant-infecting viruses belonging to the Geminiviridae family. These viruses are characterized by a single-stranded circular DNA genome. As systemic pathogens, they invade the plant's vascular system, disrupting normal physiological processes and leading to severe developmental abnormalities throughout the host organism.

The host range of Capulavirus primarily includes various legumes such as chickpeas and beans, as well as several other agricultural crops. These viruses are particularly prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions where environmental conditions favor both the growth of host plants and the activity of vector insects.

Common symptoms associated with Capulavirus infection include mosaic patterns on leaves, yellowing (chlorosis), leaf curling, and severe stunting of the plant. In many cases, infected plants show reduced vigor, distorted leaves, and significant yield losses, making them a serious concern for farmers and agricultural producers.

Transmission of Capulavirus is predominantly achieved through insect vectors, most notably whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci). The virus is acquired by the insect during feeding and is subsequently transmitted to healthy plants. Understanding the life cycle and migration patterns of these vectors is essential for predicting disease outbreaks in the field.

Managing Capulavirus relies on integrated pest management (IPM) strategies, as there are no direct chemical treatments to cure infected plants. Effective prevention methods include:

  • Planting resistant or tolerant crop varieties.
  • Implementing strict vector control programs using insecticides.
  • Eliminating reservoir weed hosts in and around fields to reduce viral inoculum.
  • Practicing proper crop rotation and spacing to break the cycle of infection.
