Beet curly top virus (Capulavirus betae) is a viral plant pathogen belonging to the Capulavirus genus. This disease primarily impacts sugar beet production, causing severe physiological stress and significant reductions in crop quality and yield. It is considered a specialized virus that targets members of the Amaranthaceae family.

The primary hosts of this virus are Beta vulgaris crops, including sugar beet, fodder beet, and garden beet. Infection often occurs during the early vegetative stages, but it can affect plants at any point in the season. The impact is most severe when early infestation restricts the development of the leaf canopy and prevents the accumulation of sugars in the root.

Key symptoms observed in affected fields include:

  • severe leaf curling and distortion;
  • chlorosis or yellowing of foliage in a mosaic pattern;
  • stunted growth and significantly reduced plant size;
  • deformed root structures with poor sugar content.

The spread of the virus is strictly dependent on insect vectors, specifically certain species of aphids. These insects acquire the virus while feeding on infected plants and subsequently transmit it to healthy ones during the feeding process. Environmental conditions that promote rapid reproduction and flight of aphid populations significantly accelerate the spread of the disease throughout the field.

Effective management requires an integrated approach focusing on vector control and field hygiene. Applying timely insecticides to mitigate aphid populations is essential during early crop stages. Additionally, controlling weeds that serve as alternate hosts and ensuring proper distance between new fields and older plantings helps to lower the risk of primary infection. Using virus-resistant cultivars remains the most effective long-term strategy for damage mitigation.
