Capulavirus plantagonis is a plant viral disease caused by a member of the Capulavirus genus. As a single-stranded DNA virus, it disrupts the host's normal cellular metabolism, leading to systemic infection and physiological stress within the plant tissues. Understanding its molecular structure is crucial for accurate diagnosis in agricultural settings.
The primary hosts for this virus are members of the Plantaginaceae family, commonly known as plantains. However, field observations suggest that the host range can expand to include various weeds and occasionally certain agricultural crops present near viral reservoirs. The virus survives between seasons in perennial weed species, providing a continuous source of inoculum.
The disease symptoms typically manifest as chlorotic mosaics on the leaves, leaf distortion, and stunted plant growth. Internodal shortening is a common sign, leading to a dwarf appearance and significantly reduced biomass.
