Causative agent and disease type. Chrysanthemum virus beta (Carlavirus betachrysanthemi) is a viral pathogen classified within the Carlavirus genus. It causes a systemic disease, meaning the virus spreads throughout the plant's vascular tissues, interfering with physiological processes and leading to chronic health decline in infected specimens.
Host range. The primary host for this virus is the chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum). It is particularly prevalent in commercial greenhouses where cultivars are grown for floral production. The virus thrives in high-density planting environments where transmission vectors can move easily between individual plants.
Symptoms and signs. Clinical signs of the infection typically include foliar mosaic patterns, chlorotic mottling, and irregular spotting on the leaves. Infected plants often exhibit stunted development, reduced vigor, and distortions in flower shape or color. These symptoms severely impact the aesthetic and commercial quality of the ornamental plants.
Development and transmission. The virus is primarily transmitted by sap-sucking insects, most notably aphid species, which act as vectors.
