Description
Cactus carlavirus (lat. Carlavirus cacti) is a highly specialized plant pathogen causing viral infection in members of the Cactaceae family. The causative agent is a virus belonging to the genus Carlavirus, characterized by filamentous virions. The disease is systemic, affecting all plant organs and disrupting critical metabolic and physiological processes.
The primary hosts susceptible to this pathogen include various species within the Cactaceae family. The virus is most frequently detected in succulent collections, where close proximity between plants and the presence of insect vectors facilitate the rapid transmission of the infection throughout the collection.
Symptoms of the disease typically manifest as mosaic patterns on the epidermis, chlorotic streaks, stem distortion, and stunted growth. In many instances, the symptoms may remain latent (hidden), which complicates early detection and contributes to the unnoticed spread of the virus among healthy specimens.
The virus is primarily disseminated in nature and nurseries by sap-sucking insects, such as aphids, which serve as active vectors. Additionally, mechanical transmission is a major concern, occurring through the use of non-sterile cutting tools during propagation or repotting if proper sanitation protocols are not observed.
There are no specific chemical treatments available to cure viral infections in plants, so management strategies must focus on preventative measures. Key strategies include routine health monitoring, intensive pest control, strict disinfection of all tools, and the immediate isolation or destruction of suspected infected plants to prevent an outbreak.
