Description
Hop latent virus, formally known as Carlavirus humuli, is a common viral pathogen affecting hop cultivation worldwide. As a member of the Carlavirus genus, it typically establishes systemic infection, persisting within the plant tissues and causing long-term physiological stress to the host.
The primary host for this virus is Humulus lupulus (common hop). While the virus is often referred to as "latent" because it does not always produce severe visible symptoms, it significantly impairs the plant's metabolic functions, leading to reduced vigour and potentially lower yields of hop cones during the harvest season.
Symptoms, when present, include chlorotic mottling, leaf curling, or irregular yellowing of the foliage. In more susceptible cultivars, growth may be stunted, and the overall quality of the hop crop decreases. Due to its latent nature, infected plants are frequently asymptomatic, allowing the virus to spread silently throughout a field.
Transmission occurs through vegetative propagation using infected rootstocks or rhizomes. In the field, the virus is spread mechanically via contaminated pruning tools and by insect vectors, primarily aphids, which transmit the virus while feeding on plant sap. These vectors are critical in the rapid dissemination of the pathogen within hop yards.
Prevention and control strategies focus on integrated pest management and rigorous sanitation. Key measures include:
- Utilizing certified virus-free planting stock from reputable nurseries.
- Rigorous control of aphid populations using targeted insecticide applications.
- Regular disinfection of all pruning and harvesting equipment.
- Systematic roguing of infected plants to reduce the local inoculum source.
