Description
The Hydrangea chlorotic mottle virus (HdCMV) is a plant pathogenic virus belonging to the Carlavirus genus. It causes a systemic infection in host plants, interfering with cellular functions and overall plant vitality, which is a major concern for hydrangea producers and ornamental nurseries.
The primary host for this virus is Hydrangea macrophylla. Once a plant is infected, the virus spreads through the vascular system, leading to a persistent condition that affects the plant for its entire lifespan and significantly diminishes its ornamental quality.
Symptoms of the infection typically manifest as chlorotic spotting, mosaic patterns on the foliage, and occasional leaf crinkling or deformation. In severe cases, the growth of the shrub is stunted, and the vibrant color of the flowers may be negatively impacted, making the plants visually unappealing and structurally weak.
Transmission occurs primarily through biological vectors such as aphids, which transfer the virus while feeding on plant sap. Furthermore, mechanical transmission is a common risk factor; the virus can easily move from plant to plant via pruning shears, knives, or other horticultural equipment if these tools are not sanitized between uses.
Management of this viral disease is entirely preventative, as no chemical curative treatment exists for viruses in plants. Best practices include:
- Sourcing only certified virus-free propagation material.
- Implementing strict sanitation protocols for all pruning and grafting tools using strong disinfectants.
- Monitoring for and controlling aphid populations throughout the growing season.
- Promptly rogueing and destroying any symptomatic plants to prevent further spread within the nursery or garden.
