Caper latent virus (Carlavirus latenscapparis) is a viral pathogen belonging to the Carlavirus genus. It is known as a latent disease, meaning it can colonize its host plant and exist systemically without causing severe visible symptoms under normal conditions, which complicates early detection in agricultural fields.
The primary host for this virus is the caper bush (Capparis spinosa). It is particularly problematic in commercial plantations where monoculture systems allow for easier transmission of viral particles between closely planted individuals, leading to long-term impact on the health of the orchard.
While the virus is often latent, under stress conditions or in specific cultivars, the following symptoms may be observed:
- Mild leaf mosaic or chlorotic spotting;
- Subtle deformation or curling of leaves;
- Stunted growth during the active vegetation phase;
- Reduced vigor and floral bud production.
