Carnation latent virus (Carlavirus latensdianthi) is a plant pathogenic virus belonging to the genus Carlavirus. It is widely recognized in the field of plant pathology for its tendency to cause asymptomatic or mild infections, which complicates early detection in flower greenhouses.

The primary host for this pathogen is the carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus). Because the virus is systemic, it easily invades all tissues of the plant, including the meristem, making it highly persistent in vegetative propagation cycles and clonally produced crops.

Symptoms of the infection are generally subtle. Plants may show slight stunting, chlorotic mottling, or reduced vigor compared to healthy stock. However, in many cases, there are no visible signs, leading to the virus being inadvertently spread through the propagation of infected but seemingly healthy cuttings.

Transmission occurs primarily through mechanical sap inoculation during pruning, harvesting, or handling. Insects, such as aphids, can also act as vectors for Carlaviruses, effectively transferring the virus between plants in a production environment. Once the stock is infected, the virus remains present throughout the life of the plant.

Effective management relies on strict phytosanitary protocols. Growers should prioritize the use of meristem-cultured, virus-indexed stock. Sanitizing tools between tasks with appropriate disinfectants and implementing rigorous pest management programs to control potential vectors are essential steps to prevent the spread of this latent infection.
