The Carlavirus latenshumuli, commonly known as Hop latent virus (HLV), is a plant pathogen belonging to the Carlavirus genus. It is a widespread virus in hop-growing regions, known for its ability to persist in the plant host for long periods, often without causing severe visible symptoms under optimal growing conditions.

The primary host for this virus is the hop plant (Humulus lupulus). Because the virus is systemic, it infects the entire plant, including the rhizomes, which facilitates its persistence and spread within commercial hop yards through standard propagation practices.

While the virus is considered "latent," heavy infections or specific environmental stressors can reveal symptoms such as mild leaf chlorosis, mosaic-like patterns, and a general reduction in plant vigor. These effects can significantly impact the final quality and yield of the hop cones, despite the subtle outward appearance of the infection.

The pathogen is primarily spread through the use of infected vegetative propagation material. Additionally, aphids act as vectors that can transmit the virus from plant to plant. Mechanical transmission through contaminated pruning tools during the growing season is another critical pathway that farmers must manage to prevent an outbreak.
