Narcissus latent virus (Carlavirus latensnarcissi) is a viral plant pathogen belonging to the Carlavirus genus. The virus is recognized for its ability to cause asymptomatic or "latent" infections, where host plants show little to no visible signs of disease, effectively turning them into silent reservoirs that spread the virus throughout a collection or field.
The primary hosts for this virus are plants within the Amaryllidaceae family, most notably the Narcissus species. The virus persists systemically in the bulb, which facilitates its spread through standard horticultural practices such as bulb division and vegetative propagation, making it a critical concern for ornamental plant nurseries and professional bulb growers.
Symptomatology can be subtle and easily overlooked. Affected plants may exhibit faint mottling or chlorotic streaking on their foliage, accompanied by minor growth stunting or reduced flower quality. In many cases, these symptoms are suppressed and only appear when the plant is under environmental stress, such as improper irrigation, poor soil conditions, or high temperatures.
The pathogen is transmitted primarily via insect vectors, such as aphids, which acquire the virus through feeding on infected sap and transmit it to healthy tissues. Furthermore, mechanical transmission is a significant factor in commercial production settings, as contaminated knives, pruning shears, and other cultivation tools can spread the virus rapidly during routine maintenance and harvesting.
Effective management relies on a combination of rigorous sanitation and biological control. Key strategies include the use of virus-indexed stock, constant monitoring for aphid populations to minimize transmission risk, and strict sterilization protocols for all tools. Removing and destroying symptomatic plants is essential to prevent the latent reservoir from impacting the health of the entire crop.
