Description
The causative agent of this plant disease is Carlavirus miphlocis, a member of the Carlavirus genus. It is a filamentous, single-stranded RNA virus that disrupts the physiological functions of host plants. Once a plant is infected, the virus becomes systemic, spreading through the vascular tissues to reach all vegetative and reproductive parts of the specimen.
The primary hosts for this pathogen are plants of the genus Phlox. The virus can infect both annual and perennial varieties, causing significant issues in nurseries and home gardens. Because the virus persists in the rootstocks of perennials, infected plants can serve as a constant reservoir of infection for many years if not properly identified and removed.
Symptoms of the disease are usually manifested as foliar mosaic patterns, featuring an intermingling of dark green, light green, or yellow-tinted patches. Infected plants often show signs of stunted growth, leaf distortion, and reduced flowering capacity. Over time, the decorative value of the phlox decreases significantly as the disease progresses and weakens the host.
Transmission occurs through several distinct pathways. Aphids, acting as efficient vectors, transmit the virus by feeding on the sap of healthy plants after visiting infected ones. Furthermore, mechanical transmission is a major factor in managed landscapes, as the virus can easily move from plant to plant through pruning shears or tools used for division if they are not sterilized between plants.
Management of Carlavirus miphlocis relies heavily on phytosanitary measures. There is no cure for this viral infection once established; therefore, prevention is key. Growers should prioritize the removal of symptomatic plants, maintain strict aphid control, and implement rigorous cleaning protocols for all cutting tools to prevent cross-contamination within the garden.
