Description
Pathogen and disease type. Carlavirus petasitis belongs to the Carlavirus genus within the Betaflexiviridae family. It is a plant-pathogenic virus containing single-stranded RNA. This pathogen causes systemic viral infections, which means that once a plant is infected, the virus spreads through the vascular system, impacting the entire biological framework of the host organism.
Susceptible crops. As the name suggests, the primary hosts are plants of the genus Petasites. However, members of the Carlavirus genus are known to have relatively broad host ranges. In agricultural and horticultural settings, this virus can potentially infect various ornamental perennials and weeds, which often act as intermediate reservoirs for the virus to move into commercial crops.
Symptoms and clinical signs. Infected plants typically exhibit characteristic viral symptoms: mosaic patterns on leaves, chlorotic spots, and varying degrees of leaf deformation. Stunted growth, shortening of internodes, and distorted leaf edges are common occurrences. In some cultivars, the infection may appear asymptomatic for long periods, allowing the virus to persist and spread undetected within a collection or field.
Development and transmission conditions. The primary transmission route in nature is via aphid vectors, which acquire the virus while feeding on infected sap and transmit it to healthy plants. Transmission can also occur mechanically through human activity, such as pruning, handling plants, or using contaminated gardening tools. High aphid activity, typically associated with warmer temperatures, significantly increases the spread rate of the disease.
Damage and control measures. The viral infection leads to reduced photosynthetic capacity, weakening the plant and lowering its aesthetic or productive value. Since there are no curative chemical treatments for viral diseases in plants, the strategy focuses entirely on prevention and management. Key steps include:
- rigorous weed control to eliminate alternative virus hosts;
- implementing integrated pest management to control aphid populations;
- sanitizing tools and equipment to prevent mechanical transmission;
- sourcing and planting certified, virus-free plant materials.
