Description
Pea mosaic, caused by viruses belonging to the Carlavirus genus, is a destructive systemic disease affecting various legume crops. This virus interferes with plant physiological processes, leading to stunted growth, impaired reproductive capacity, and significant yield reductions for farmers worldwide.
The host range of the virus includes field peas, beans, lentils, and chickpeas, along with various perennial clover species. These perennial hosts often act as reservoirs, allowing the virus to overwinter and persist in agricultural landscapes even when the primary crop is absent.
Visible symptoms include mosaic patterns of light and dark green on leaves, leaf distortion, curling, and stunting of the entire plant. In some cases, streak-like necrosis or severe chlorosis can be observed on stems and pods, which drastically reduces the commercial value of the harvested produce.
Transmission occurs primarily through non-persistent transmission by various species of aphids. When an aphid feeds on an infected plant and subsequently moves to a healthy one, it introduces the virus into the plant cells during the probing process, facilitating rapid spread across the field.
Management strategies focus on preventing the spread rather than curing the plant. The most effective methods include:
- Selecting resistant or tolerant plant varieties.
- Implementing strict aphid population control during the early stages of growth.
- Maintaining field hygiene by removing symptomatic plants and weeds.
- Establishing spatial buffers between new crops and infected legume areas.
