Pea mosaic virus, taxonomically identified as Carlavirus pisolani, is a significant viral pathogen within the Betaflexiviridae family. As an obligate parasite, it infects plant tissues by hijacking cellular machinery, leading to severe physiological disruptions and a decline in crop vitality.

The virus primarily affects leguminous crops, including garden peas, sweet peas, vetches, and various clover species. These hosts act as biological reservoirs, allowing the pathogen to overwinter in wild vegetation and subsequently spread to commercial fields during the growing season.

Symptoms of the infection typically manifest as foliar mottling or mosaic patterns characterized by light green or yellowish patches. Infected plants often show stunted growth, distorted leaf architecture, and reduced flower production, which directly correlates to significantly lower seed yields and poorer grain quality at harvest.
