Carlavirus sigmaphlocis is a plant viral pathogen belonging to the Carlavirus genus. It is a specific disease primarily affecting ornamental plants, known to cause significant physiological stress and aesthetic degradation in vulnerable species.

The primary host for this virus is the phlox species (Phlox paniculata). Because these plants are often grown in dense clusters for landscaping, the virus can quickly spread throughout a collection, leading to widespread infection if left unmanaged.

Symptoms of the infection typically present as foliar mosaic patterns, including light-green or yellow chlorotic spots, streaks, or a mottled appearance on the leaves. Infected plants often exhibit stunted growth, malformed leaf shapes, and reduced vigor, which culminates in poor flowering performance.

Transmission occurs through mechanical means and biological vectors. Sap-sucking insects, such as aphids, are the most frequent natural vectors of the virus. Furthermore, humans contribute to the spread by using contaminated tools (like shears or knives) during pruning or propagation without proper disinfection protocols.

Since there are no chemical cures for viral diseases in plants, management relies strictly on prevention and sanitation. Growers should focus on sourcing virus-free planting material, maintaining strict insect control programs, and promptly removing and disposing of any symptomatic plants to stop the cycle of transmission.
