Description
Clover yellow vein virus (CYVV) is a viral pathogen of plants, formally classified within the genus Potyvirus. It causes significant physiological disruption by interfering with the plant's ability to produce energy, ultimately leading to systemic failure and a weakened state of the entire crop stand.
The virus primarily affects various species of the Trifolium genus, such as red clover and white clover, but it also poses a threat to other important legumes, including peas, beans, and lupines. Its broad host range, which includes various weed species, makes it difficult to eradicate completely from agricultural environments.
Symptoms of the infection typically include chlorotic mosaic patterns on the foliage, vein yellowing, and stunted growth. In severe cases, the leaves exhibit curling or crinkling, and the overall plant height is significantly reduced. These symptoms not only affect the aesthetics of the crop but also lead to a drastic reduction in forage quality and yield.
The transmission of the virus is predominantly mediated by aphids in a non-persistent manner, meaning the insect can pick up the virus and transmit it immediately after probing an infected plant. Additionally, the virus can be spread mechanically through contaminated machinery, tools, or physical contact between infected and healthy tissues in a field setting.
Effective management strategies focus on preventing the spread of the virus. This includes the implementation of rigorous phytosanitary measures, such as eliminating weed hosts from surrounding areas and controlling aphid populations. Using certified, virus-free seed stocks and breeding for resistance remain the most sustainable approaches to minimizing the economic impact of this disease.
