Description
Vigna mosaic virus (Carlavirus vignae) is a viral pathogen belonging to the Carlavirus genus that poses a significant threat to legume crops worldwide. The virus disrupts normal plant physiology, causing systemic symptoms that interfere with growth and lead to reduced agricultural production.
The primary hosts of this virus are members of the Vigna genus, including cowpea (Vigna unguiculata), as well as common beans and other related legumes. The pathogen establishes itself within the vascular system, effectively utilizing the plant's resources to replicate and spread throughout the host tissue.
Symptoms of the infection typically manifest as foliar mosaic patterns, featuring an intermingling of light and dark green areas. Affected plants often exhibit stunted growth, distorted leaf shapes, curling, and a significant decrease in pod formation, which directly results in yield loss and lower seed quality.
The disease is primarily disseminated by insect vectors, most notably aphids, which transmit the viral particles while feeding on plant sap.
