Description

Cashew bunchy is a destructive plant disease affecting Anacardium occidentale, causing significant physiological distress and structural deformation. This condition leads to stunted growth and severe yield reduction, often rendering infected branches unproductive for the lifespan of the plant.

The disease is primarily caused by phytoplasmas, which are specialized bacteria that reside within the phloem tissues of the host plant. These pathogens disrupt the movement of essential sugars and nutrients throughout the tree, leading to the systemic symptoms characteristic of this specific disorder.

The most distinct symptoms include extreme internode shortening and abnormal proliferation of shoots, which gives the canopy a dense, rosette-like appearance known as «bunchy top.» Affected trees exhibit small, chlorotic leaves, and in advanced stages, they stop producing normal inflorescences, thereby failing to yield marketable cashew nuts.

Transmission occurs mainly through insect vectors, specifically leafhoppers (cicadellids), which acquire the phytoplasma while feeding on infected trees and transmit it to healthy ones. The rate of spread is highly influenced by the vector population density, which thrives under specific tropical climates, particularly in regions with high humidity and favorable host plants nearby.

Management strategies require a multidisciplinary approach focusing on sanitation and vector control. Important measures include:

  • Prompt eradication and burning of infected trees to eliminate the inoculum source.
  • Application of systemic insecticides to manage leafhopper populations during peak activity.
  • Strict use of virus-free or phytoplasma-free nursery grafting stock to prevent initial outbreaks.

Ongoing monitoring of plantation health is vital, as early detection allows for the isolation of infected zones before the disease can reach epidemic proportions. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices, including proper canopy ventilation, can further reduce the attractiveness of the site to insect vectors.
