Caulimoviridae is a family of viruses that possess a double-stranded DNA genome and serve as significant pathogens for various botanical species. These viruses are distinct due to their replication cycle, which involves a reverse transcription step, distinguishing them from most other plant-infecting RNA viruses and making them highly effective at infecting their host cells.

These viruses affect a broad range of agricultural commodities, most notably cruciferous crops, but also including various legumes and ornamental flowers. The Cauliflower Mosaic Virus (CaMV) is the primary example of this family, often used as a model in laboratory research due to its prevalence and the significant economic impact it has on global vegetable production.

Symptoms typically manifest as mosaic patterns on foliage, chlorosis (yellowing), necrosis, and overall stunting of plant development. In severe cases, the structural deformation of leaves and impaired physiological processes prevent the plant from reaching maturity, which significantly reduces total crop yield and degrades the quality of the harvested produce.

The transmission of these viruses is mainly facilitated by aphid vectors, which acquire the virus while feeding on infected sap and transmit it to healthy plants. Additionally, the virus can be spread through mechanical contact, such as contaminated agricultural machinery or tools, and sometimes through infected propagation materials like cuttings or seeds if rigorous sanitary controls are ignored.

Effective management strategies rely on a combination of cultural and chemical interventions. Producers should prioritize the use of certified virus-free seeds, implement stringent pest control programs to manage aphid populations, and maintain high standards of equipment sanitation. Early detection and the physical removal of symptomatic plants are essential to prevent secondary spread within a commercial farm environment.
