Description
Cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) is a double-stranded DNA virus belonging to the Caulimovirus genus. It is considered one of the most economically significant viruses affecting plants within the Brassicaceae family globally, causing systemic infection in susceptible hosts.
The primary hosts for this pathogen include various species of the genus Brassica, such as cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, kale, turnips, and radishes. Furthermore, several wild weed species serve as natural reservoirs, allowing the virus to persist between growing seasons.
Symptoms of the infection typically include a mosaic pattern on the foliage, vein clearing, leaf distortion, curling, and severe stunting of the plant. In many cases, infected leaves may show chlorotic spots or rings, which reduce the photosynthetic capacity of the crop.
The transmission of this virus occurs in a non-persistent, non-circulative manner, primarily facilitated by various aphid species such as the green peach aphid. Because the transmission is fast, the virus spreads rapidly across fields during the peak activity of insect vectors.
The damage caused by CaMV leads to significant yield losses and reduced quality of harvestable produce, such as cauliflower curds or cabbage heads. Because there is no chemical cure for viral infections once a plant is infected, the focus must remain on prevention and vector control.
Effective management strategies rely on integrated pest management (IPM). This includes the elimination of alternative weed hosts, maintaining strict weed control, monitoring aphid populations, and applying appropriate insecticides to minimize the insect-to-plant transmission of the virus.
