Description

The disease is caused by Caulimovirus tessellodahliae, a plant-infecting virus characterized by a double-stranded DNA genome. It belongs to the Caulimoviridae family, and its biological cycle involves replication within the host cytoplasm, leading to systemic infection throughout the entire plant structure.

The primary host for this pathogen is the genus Dahlia. Because the virus is systemic, it accumulates in the tuberous roots of the plants. This characteristic makes the virus particularly persistent in cultivated areas, as stored tubers serve as the primary source of infection for the following growing season.

Symptoms typically manifest as mosaic patterns on foliage, characterized by alternating patches of light green, yellow, or chlorotic tissue. Severe infections may lead to leaf distortion, stunted plant development, and a reduction in both the quantity and quality of blooms, which significantly impacts the aesthetic value of the crop.

Transmission occurs primarily through biological vectors, specifically aphid species that feed on the sap of infected plants and subsequently transmit the virus to healthy ones. Additionally, mechanical transmission is a major concern in commercial floriculture, as the virus can be spread by pruning tools, knives, and other equipment if hygiene protocols are not strictly followed.

Management of the disease is challenging as there are no direct chemical treatments to cure an infected plant. Therefore, control focuses on preventative strategies such as rigorous roguing of symptomatic plants, strict weed management to remove potential host reservoirs, and chemical control of aphids during the active growing season. Furthermore, heat treatment of tubers or micropropagation techniques are employed by nurseries to produce virus-free planting stock.
