Description
Pathogen and disease type. The disease is caused by Caulimovirus tesselloscrophulariae, a member of the Caulimoviridae family. As a systemic plant viral disease, it integrates into the host plant's metabolism, causing physiological stress and altering cellular development throughout the infected organism.
Host range. The virus primarily infects plants of the Scrophularia genus (figworts). While it is frequently observed in wild populations, it can pose a significant challenge to ornamental gardening when related plants are grown in close proximity or under stressed conditions in nurseries.
Symptoms and signs of infection. The hallmark symptom is the characteristic mosaic or tessellated pattern on the leaves, featuring alternating light and dark green areas. Infected plants often display stunting, leaf distortion, and reduced vigor, which directly impacts the ornamental value and the overall lifespan of the plant.
Conditions for development and spread. Transmission occurs mainly through insect vectors, specifically aphids, which acquire the virus while feeding on infected sap and transmit it to healthy hosts. Mechanical transmission is also common, occurring through contaminated pruning tools or during propagation activities when sap from an infected plant reaches a fresh wound on a healthy one.
Harmfulness and protection measures. The disease negatively impacts plant aesthetics and developmental stability. Since there is no curative treatment for viral infections in plants, management relies entirely on strict preventive protocols. This includes vector control, rigorous sanitation, and the use of virus-free stock to prevent the introduction of the pathogen into garden beds.
