Description

The Strawberry vein banding virus (SVBV), scientifically classified within the Caulimovirus genus, is a significant pathogen affecting strawberry plantations globally. As a double-stranded DNA virus, it disrupts the vascular integrity and photosynthetic capacity of the plant, leading to stunted growth and reduced metabolic efficiency in affected tissues.

The primary host for this virus is the cultivated strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa). The virus is particularly insidious because it often exists in co-infection with other viruses, creating a complex disease state that is difficult to distinguish from physiological disorders or nutrient deficiencies. Its impact is most critical in high-value berry production.

Symptoms typically manifest as yellowing or chlorotic banding along the veins of the leaves. This is often accompanied by leaf distortion, puckering, and a general reduction in plant vigor. In severe cases, the infected foliage becomes brittle, and the overall yield of the plant is significantly compromised, resulting in fewer and smaller fruits.

The virus is primarily transmitted by several aphid species, most notably the strawberry aphid (Chaetosiphon fragaefolii), which acts as a vector in a semi-persistent manner. Beyond insect transmission, the virus is spread through the distribution and planting of infected strawberry runners. It does not spread through seeds or mechanical contact under standard field conditions.

The management of SVBV relies heavily on preventative strategies, as there is no chemical cure for infected plants. Growers should focus on the following:

  • Sourcing certified virus-free planting material from reputable nurseries.
  • Implementing rigorous insect management programs to control aphid populations.
  • Regular inspection and roguing of any plants showing symptoms of vein banding.
  • Utilizing screenhouses for foundation stock to prevent vector access.

Maintaining the long-term health of strawberry crops requires an integrated pest management approach. By combining strict phytosanitary measures with active vector control, producers can mitigate the spread of this virus and ensure the viability and productivity of their commercial plantings.
