Celavirus is a viral pathogen that primarily affects plants belonging to the Apiaceae family. As a systemic disease, it disrupts the physiological and biochemical processes within the host plant, leading to stunted growth and severe yield reduction. This disease is particularly concerning for commercial vegetable production due to its ability to spread rapidly across fields.
The host range of Celavirus includes economically important crops such as celery, parsley, parsnips, and coriander. It can impact these plants at various growth stages, often causing the most severe damage during the early developmental phases, which can jeopardize the entire crop establishment and final harvest quality.
The symptoms of Celavirus infection typically include mosaic patterns on leaves, interveinal chlorosis, and leaf distortion. Plants often show stunted development, with shortened internodes and deformed foliage. In severe cases, the entire plant architecture becomes compromised, resulting in significant losses in biomass and marketability of the produce.
The spread of this virus is largely facilitated by insect vectors, most notably aphids. These insects acquire the virus while feeding on infected plant sap and transmit it to healthy plants during their feeding cycle. Environmental conditions that promote insect population growth, such as mild temperatures and high humidity, significantly accelerate the spread of the virus.
