Celery yellow is a significant viral condition that primarily affects celery crops, often associated with the Beet Western Yellows Virus (BWYV). It is a systemic infection that disrupts the plant's vascular tissue, causing substantial physiological stress and reducing both yield and the market value of the produce.

The host range of the virus includes all major celery types, such as celery root, leaf celery, and stalk celery. It is also known to persist in various wild plants within the Apiaceae family, which act as reservoirs for the virus during off-seasons, ensuring its survival and transmission to new crops.

The primary symptoms of the disease include chlorosis (yellowing) of the leaves, which typically begins at the margins and progresses inward. Affected plants often exhibit stunted growth, brittle foliage, and reduced vigor. In root celery varieties, the development of the bulb is severely impaired, making the final product unsuitable for harvest.

The transmission mechanism is strictly dependent on insect vectors, most notably aphids. These pests acquire the virus while feeding on infected plants and subsequently transmit it to healthy ones during their feeding cycles. The rate of spread is often determined by environmental conditions that favor aphid population explosions, such as mild winters and warm springs.

Management of Celery yellow relies heavily on preventive measures rather than curative ones. Farmers should prioritize controlling aphid populations through integrated pest management (IPM) practices, maintaining weed-free fields to eliminate secondary hosts, and using disease-resistant cultivars when available.
