Cheravirus mali is a viral pathogen known to infect fruit-bearing trees, specifically apples. As a member of the Cheravirus genus, it causes systemic infection within the host, leading to physiological stress and reduced metabolic efficiency. Once an apple tree is infected, the virus remains in the plant's tissues, typically persisting throughout the life of the host.

The primary host range includes Malus domestica (domestic apple). While some related viral infections can appear in other rosaceous species, Cheravirus mali is specifically associated with symptoms on apple leaves and shoots. The severity of the impact often depends on the apple cultivar's sensitivity, the age of the tree, and environmental stress conditions.

Symptoms typically manifest as mosaic patterns, chlorotic mottling, or yellow rings on the leaves during the early to mid-growing season. Infected foliage may appear distorted or smaller than healthy leaves. As the infection progresses, the tree may show reduced terminal growth, decreased fruit size, and sparse canopy development, negatively affecting both yield volume and fruit quality.

There are no chemical treatments available to cure trees once infected by Cheravirus mali. Therefore, management relies entirely on prevention and strict hygiene practices. Growers should prioritize sourcing disease-free nursery stock, implementing rigorous tool sanitation protocols between trees, and monitoring orchards for any visual symptoms to rogue out infected trees promptly to prevent further orchard-wide spread.
