Description
The causal agent of this disease is the fungus Sphaerotheca mors-uvae. It is a highly destructive powdery mildew pathogen that frequently attacks various berry crops, leading to significant yield losses if left untreated.
The primary hosts for this pathogen include gooseberries and currants. The infection manifests throughout the growing season, primarily affecting young, succulent tissue which is most susceptible to the fungal invasion during periods of rapid shoot development.
Symptoms initially appear as white, dusty patches on leaves, shoots, and young berries. As the disease progresses, these patches turn brown, thicken, and develop a felt-like texture, leading to shoot stunting, deformation, and the cracking of affected fruit.
Favorable conditions for the spread of the disease include high humidity, moderate temperatures, and poor air circulation within the shrub canopy. The fungus overwinters in the form of cleistothecia on infected plant debris, which serves as the primary inoculum source the following spring.
Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as pruning infected shoots, maintaining proper spacing, and balanced fertilization are critical. Chemical control involves the timely application of fungicides during the growing season to prevent secondary infections and protect the fruit harvest.
