Description

Cherry rosette is a viral disease that significantly impacts stone fruit species, causing characteristic growth abnormalities. The pathogen interferes with the hormonal balance of the plant, leading to stunted development and disrupted vegetative growth cycles which often prove fatal for the fruit-bearing capacity of the tree.

This disease primarily affects species within the Prunus genus, including sweet cherry (Prunus avium) and sour cherry (Prunus cerasus). Transmission of the virus is typically facilitated by grafting using infected scions or rootstocks, as well as by mechanical transmission through contaminated pruning tools used in routine orchard maintenance.

The most diagnostic symptom of cherry rosette is the severe shortening of internodes, which results in leaves clustering together to form dense, rosette-like structures at the tips of shoots. Affected leaves are frequently reduced in size, chlorotic, and may exhibit mosaic patterns or marginal leaf curling, preventing the tree from effectively producing energy.

The development and spread of the disease are highly dependent on the presence of viral vectors, such as specific nematodes or sap-sucking insects that transmit the virus while feeding. Once a tree is infected, the virus spreads systemically, moving through the phloem to reach all parts of the tree, including the roots and fruits.

The impact of cherry rosette is devastating to commercial orchards, leading to total yield loss and premature tree decline. Because there is no known cure for infected trees, management relies heavily on strict phytosanitary practices. Preventive strategies include rigorous inspection of nursery stock, sterilization of cutting tools, and the immediate rogueing of symptomatic trees to prevent the virus from spreading to healthy neighbors.
